Teaching is Renee's main mission. She has taught a variety of courses at MCC, ranging from basic English to literature and learning skills. In 1997, Renee received the Excellence in Teaching Award at MCC. Her contributions to MCC include the following:
*Phi Theta Kappa Advisor since 1986. She has helped her chapter win the highest ranking position: Five-Star status four times in the last several years.
*English Coordinator for several years.
*Board of Student Publication board member, charter and by-law committee, and past chair.
*Service Learning instructor. In that capacity, Renee helped coordinate the Teen Read Festival, now the Maui Literacy Circles festival, for two years. High school students are selected to team up with MCC Service Learning students to discuss readings from the Maui Literary Circles' reading list. Then on the festival day, students meet and question the authors at the learning celebration on campus.
Dr. Renee Riley traveled as far as India before settling down at Maui Community College in 1985. Over the past eighteen years, she has received a doctural degree, attained Associate Professor of English status, raised a bright and exuberant son, and in the past year, traveled again to India, China, Bali, Ireland, and other exotic places with her husband and son.
