Activities and Accomplishments in promoting learning and/or professional development
|
I've been teaching writing at Kapi`olani College since 1992. I came to Kapi`olani from The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Calgary, Alberta, where I was a Dean from 1986 to 1992. Before that, I taught writing and literature at Mount Royal College in Calgary. My first post-secondary teaching position was at the University Of Western Ontario in London, Ontario -- where I taught writing and English to Speakers of Other Languages in the early 80's.
Teaching at Kapi`olani is a career highlight. This is a wonderful campus and a perfect fit for me. I enjoy teaching Business and Technical Writing. I am challenged by our diverse student population and well supported by colleagues.
My doctorate is in Adult Education (University of Toronto, 1983). I am intrigued and motivated to help adults learn. Here in Hawai`i, I engaged in more adult learning myself. In 1998, I completed an MBA from the College of Business Administration at UH Manoa. This complements my Adult Education background. It adds to my credibility in teaching business communication. I'm interested in workplace communication -- effective and efficient ways of making things run.
I like to run -- have completed the Honolulu Marathon eight times -- but I'm slowed down to walking it now since I've developed some injuries -- and -- let's face it -- aged.
Hiking is great, especially here in Hawai`i. I spend summers in Alberta, Canada, and hike in the Rockies when I'm there.
We're here for the students -- that's what it's all about. Kapi`olani is a first, or second, sometimes even third or fourth, chance for our students, and it's up to us to facilitate their success.
We can help them learn.
