Spring Seminar

The First Generation of Wo Learning Champions spent Spring 2001 preparing for their first major activity: a two-day seminar entitled “Facilitating Learning, Valuing Teaching.” Faculty across the system were invited to submit applications to attend the seminar. Twenty faculty were selected to join the eight Wo Learning Champions for a weekend at St. Stephen Diocesan Center, and their selection was announced in a letter from Dr. Joyce Tsunoda, Chancellor for the University of Hawai‘i Community Colleges.

However, world events intruded. The Fall 2001 Seminar, which had originally been scheduled for September 14-16, 2001, turned into the Spring 2002 Seminar.

The Spring Seminar participants were given directions on how to prepare for the seminar and were met with a full program of discussions and activities when they arrived at the site. The time together generated meaningful discussions and built important relationships among the faculty and staff who attended. Participants completed a formal evaluation, which indicated they had had a positive experience—most of all because of the opportunity to meet and share their ideas with their colleagues.
